PROUDLY presenting Canadian legends ANVIL – Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow’s frenzied guitar playing and drummer Robb Reiner, childhood friends, brandished what was then a new form of very fast, very raucous heavy metal.

The band’s ground-breaking second album, Metal on Metal (“KKKKK – a work of genius” – Kerrang!) featured Tap-esque gems “Butter-Bust Jerky” (detailing an exotic practice involving dairy produce and an ample lady) and “Show Me Your Tits” which, Lips insisted, was a political song celebrating women’s freedom of expression.

Anvil were contenders. The band’s ultra-heavy, proto-thrash sound would prove influential on numerous acts from Metallica to Guns N’ Roses. But, while their disciples laughed all the way to the bank, Anvil sank into obscurity.

They had gone from playing gigs in front of 20,000 people to playing in Detroit in front of one person. And that was a diehard fan for whom they had waived the entrance fee. It never occurred to Anvil to cancel the gig…

And then, a miracle…

Rescued from obscurity by acclaimed Hollywood director Sacha Gervasi’s documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil (often described as ‘Rocky with Marshall Amplification’) which followed the 80s Canadian heavy metal pioneers on a disastrous ‘comeback’ tour – men in their fifties doggedly pursuing their music for paltry return.

“It was that “yet” that got me”, said Sacha. “What was 25 years of humiliation and setbacks? Lips and Robb were now in their fifties, family men. But they were still optimistic about fulfilling their ambition to be rock stars”.

Anvil have spent decades chasing dreams. But if you’ve dedicated all that time to the thing you love, maybe that’s not chasing the dream. Maybe that’s living it…

“The true majesty of Anvil”, says Lips, “Has not yet been recognised, dude.”

You’ve read about them, watched the film – now catch legends in the flesh!
