YORFEST presents the UK’s No.1 country act THE SHIRES for a special full band headline, festival style concert at York Racecourse on Sat 23rd Sept, alongside a host of other top names including BADLY DRAWN BOY, DREADZONE, CATTLE & CANE, JASON MANFORD’S COMEDY CLUB and many more!

Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes as The Shires formed in 2013 after Earle posted a “There must be a country singer somewhere” message on Facebook seeking a partner, to which Rhodes responded.

2015 debut album Brave became the first UK country act to chart in the Top 10 of the UK Album Charts. The group’s second album, My Universe, became the fastest-selling UK country album in history when it was released in October 2016.

Across their two albums so far Ben and Crissie have had 5 A-list singles at BBC Radio 2 and appeared on a string of high profile TV shows including Graham Norton, BBC Music Awards, Children in Need Rocks and many more. They are to date the most successful UK country music act ever.

Delighted to be presenting them in a unique outdoor environment headlining a packed and diverse bill of incredible music, featuring some of the best local, national and international acts York city has ever seen, all in one glorious afternoon!

In previous years Yorfest has delivered The Lightning Seeds, The Pigeon Detectives, Slow Readers Club, The Sunshine Underground and many more established artists, so be sure to join us in Bustardthorpe Field on The Knavesmire for a truly unforgettable family day out again this summer!

Fans of the enigmatic singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy will be delighted to hear that he’s heading to York for this year’s open air live music spectacular at the city’s Racecourse.

Announced as a special guest to The Shires, 2017’s UK country superstar headliners, Badly Drawn Boy – real name Damon Gough – will be bringing his genius alternative pop to the fields of Yorkshire once again, with yet more lineup surprises on the way.

It was June 2000 when the Mercury Prize-winning, seminal ‘The Hour of the Bewilderbeast’, announced the arrival of the badly drawn genius of the man himself.

Since then, Badly Drawn has gone on to release four subsequent studio albums, spawning a wave of chart-topping UK indie hits that include the likes of ‘Once Around The Block’, ‘You Were Right’ and the beautiful, melancholic ensemble that is ‘The Shining’.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, Badly Drawn Boy’s soundtrack to the 2002 film About A Boy, starring Hugh Grant, remains one of Badly Drawn Boy’s most critically acclaimed and successful albums (certified Gold in the UK) and spawned two hit singles, ‘Silent Sigh’ and ‘Something To Talk About’.

Opening the main stage at noon on the day will be The Ed Sheeran Experience – whilst you won’t be able to see Ed himself play in th UK until next summer at least, its the next best thing to get the day of to a singalong start. Massive tunes and an authentic experience to boot its a great way to ease into the day!

Dreadzone, formed from the ashes of Big Audio Dynamite will be bringing the electro reggae and dub party vibes later in the day.

Since their inception in 1993 Dreadzone have steadily been releasing underground storms of albums, progressively bettering, refining and perfecting their own unique and inimitable take on dub – mixed as it is with aspects of dance, sublime guitar riffs, folk roots sentiments and breakbeat bass styles – whilst bringing the party to every club, dancehall and field they’ve shown up at. Always blowing audiences away and steadily earning for themselves the best possible reputation as a live act in the process.

A UK exclusive, and a festival debut this summer, is Jason Manfords Comedy Club, which will be housed in a bespoke seated marquee, with three two hour comedy shows throughout the day.

Featuring a rotating line-up across the afternoon and into early evening there’s bound to be something to appeal to the laughter lovers out there, and you’ll still get to see the live stage headliners.

Manford’s Comedy Club was launched by comedian Jason Manford and his brother Colin just over two years ago. The idea was to bring comedians from the UK circuit to small towns and cities across the country for a night of live comedy. The shows feature well-known names on both the comedy and television circuit and are all personally chosen by Jason Manford.

Jason has this to say about Yorfest: “The aim of our pop up shows is to put top quality comedians in front of local audiences at a good price, so when I was approached about bringing a Comedy Stage to the Festival, I jumped at it. We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting and innovative festival and this will be the first major festival for Manfords.”

All in all, over thirty live acts and comedy shows, across four performance areas
