The Fall + Namke Communications
With snarling, nearly incomprehensible vocals and a consuming bitter cynicism, indie/alt-rock legend Mark E Smith's near-cacophonic, a-melodic jagged jumble of guitars, sing-speak vocals and keyboards has inspired a cult audience since 1977. As the all-pervading influence of Pop Idol and it's ilk slowly seeps in to and degrades our wonderful musical heritage, how refreshing it is to know this eternal maverick and belligerent bastard is still around, nay, on his best form for years. SORRY, TONIGHT IS SOLD OUT BUT TIX STILL AVAILABLE FOR MONDAY NIGHT'S SHOW. Comedy | Indie | Rock

The Holiday Plan + No Hope In New Jersey + McQueen + Utoxator
Three-word name; check. Singer with a high, delicate voice; check. Sparse, uplifting melodies with an undercurrent of gloom; check. The Holiday Plan are emo innit? Oh yeah, in excelsis; one glance at the sleeve credits shows that, with Thursday/Taking Back Sunday producer Tim Gilles manning the knobs they could be nothing but. Crucially though, Gilles has teased the best out of this teenaged quartet, making them sound as though they have the wisdom of ages within them, and when Matt Rider allows his voice to drop an octave - as on Every Days Winter - he sounds more like Minor Threats Ian MacKaye, and the rest of the band fall into line. So yeah, The Holiday Plan are emo, but not as we know it; welcome to the great leap forward. Emo | Punk | Rock

Its virtually impossible to get a sensible sentence from Chris (guitar, sings), Tony (guitar, sings), Nick (drums, percussion) and Paul (bass, keyboards) but on stage they manage to be confusing, literate, exciting, coarse, surgically accurate and gob-smackingly gonzoid fun. All at once. Mixing metal with jazz, country with punk, alternate drawling and shouting vocals and a Fall-like abandon, to quote Leonard Cohen, theyre the drunk in a midnight choir. He also harbours ambitions to sing with Def Leppard's Joe Elliot. This is no pretty boy no-talent band, guitarist Dean is inspired by the likes of Joe Satriani and Richie Sambora. The band have already appeared extensively on the telly but you can catch them on Diggit, Popart, Popworld and TOTP on Jan 22nd, No 8 in the charts last week. AIR CONDITIONING NOW INSTALLED!! Sixty6 + Waster
The English Goo Goo Dolls have landed! Drawing US indie-jangle-rock-with-huge-tunes influences from the likes of Anberlin, Third Eye Blind, and UK stars Snow Patrol this electric 3-piece has been attracting attention from press both local and national. Sample quote, "Sixty6 bring angst, melody, brutal guitars, delicate atmospherics and songs that come from so deep down in the soul that they positively crackle with heartache" Support duties with the likes of Mark Owen, The Ordinary Boys, The Bluetones, The Delays and Freefaller have increased their nationwide fanbase enormously and it can now only be a matter of time ... Leaves + The Fallout Trust + The Call
After 2002 debut Breathe (**** across the board, "
the new Radiohead"), their signature sound of layered and deft, intricate arrangements is now even bigger and richer. Reykjavik-based Leaves' new album The Angela Test has majestic arrangements, elemental beauty and soaring melodies combining Floyd, Aphex Twin and psychedelic-era Beatles. Even Chris Martin checks 'em out. Where their inspiration for transcendent soundscapes comes from, even the band doesn't know, "I don't feel we write the songs at all," Arnar G admits. "It's like an antenna
you have to tune in and some have better connections than others".

Kid Congo and The Monkeybirds + Loophole + GT Turbo
Ever hanging around the coolest scenes and a founder member of The Gun Club (with Jeffery Lee Pierce), renegade guitar stylist and "singer's guitarist" Kid Congo has also played with such seminal and nefarious outfits as The Cramps (they set his head on fire at a gig), Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Congo Norvell as well as working with everybody from The Fall to Mark Eitzel. Growing up with Mexican and low rider music, the man with a huge range of styles from tasteful atmospherics to mournful country/blues slide, to raunchy rockabilly to wall of noise fuzz (and sometimes all in one) has assembled a sleazy, sexy band for your delectation. Think Lou Reed's Transformer. A legend. Recommended!

Fall Of Troy + The Zico Chain + Secondsmile
Let's see now ... melodic harmony rubs shoulders with tortured, assaulting screams? Super-tight precise rhythms and complex fretwork gives way to loose jam-inspired divergence? Yup, pop meets punk meets metal meets rock sometimes in the unlikeliest places and in this case it's a defiantly non-directional Washington State-based trio. If it sounds like it all adds up to chaos, that's because it often does. Recommended. ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

FIVE EVENTS IN TWO DAYS! Patrick Duff (Strangelove) - AFTERNOON SHOW! + Jim Moray
As singer and main songwriter with critically and internationally acclaimed 90s act Strangelove, Patrick quickly developed an intense and fiercely individual reputation as a performer. A little bit Dylan, a little bit Badly Drawn Boy and maybe even a little bit The Fall but always treading the thin insane or genius line. Latest album Luxury Problems, recorded with Alex Lee (Suede) and Adrian Uttley (Portishead) veers from tender heartbreakers (F*cked) to rollicking doses of observational vitriol (Married with Kids). An exceptionally passionate and dedicated songwriter and performer. Recommended.

"The rain falls upon the acidic trees of millennium scorn,The fire it has vanished, leaving behind a trail of death for all to see." Watford's Sikth are mad. No, strike that, they're stark, raving bonkers. CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy) + Hot Recruit + Azuma Vega
Giving new meaning to the term "get a Brazilian" and with a name which translated means "tired of being sexy", welcome a Sao Paulo sextet surfing the new wave of Brazilian electro-punk and marrying brash Tokyo street sassiness and favela chic to loose, stripped-back beats, angular guitars, punchy synths and
er
basic programming. Six women, including the fantastically-monikered, half-Japanese singer Lovefoxx producing at turns catchy and clumsy, cheeky and punchy subversive pop. It's Hot Chip covering The Slits trying to update The Fall, armed with cheap synths and catalogue guitars, fronted by Ladytron's wayward little sister. Not a sneer but a giggle. Pretension? Absent. Friction? Probable. Please note this show has been put forward one day, original tickets are still valid!!ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules. Fionn Regan + Dawn Landes + Slow Club + Marbled
A beguiling amalgam of Jackson C Frank, Paul Simon and Jose Gonzalez; Irish-born Fionn Regans magic, honesty and sheer heartfeltness sounds like it could have been crafted in the 60s but at least nobody is calling him the new Dylan. Yet. Fluid finger-picked cadences, rough-edged vocals and a bruising, powerful abandon suggests this s real star in the making. Mr Blunt take note of this young head on old shoulders. The last word goes to Olly Knights of Turin Brakes, writing in The Independent, We've toured with Fionn and fallen deeply in love with his luminous songs of memory, loss and hope. His ability to paint weighty and sublime imagery with words is untouchable and very rare. All I can do when he sings is to shut up and keep breathing." Nuff said. ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Ratattagg (Reary from Test Icicles) + Gay Against You
SLAP! SMACK!! SPANK!!! BOOM!!! BANG!!!! BOSH!!!! Now fallen in to legend, Test Icicles' edge-of-disaster club shows preceded a UK tour with DFA79 and then their own chaotic jaunts around the country. They sounded like everything, all at once, with little left out (neatly summed up by Boa vs Python) and from a set of just three songs record companies were chasing them, and, in their words, "It was all getting rather silly". And so to Reary Deci-Hell's "post hardcore tropical pop" which sounds not unlike Damon Albarn fronting the bastard band-child of Black Sabbath and Boy Kill Boy. If you're a bit tied down with genres and stuff this maybe isnt for you. But if you can think outside the box

Mumm-Ra + Amusement Parks On Fire + The Falling Spikes
Inspired by the duck-ponds, long walks and where "great reward could be found in a simple cup of tea and Tesco was not a multi-billion pound corporation"; so it was that Bexhill-On Sea, "a generous provider of sugary-based delights", provided inspiration for Niall Richey Buckler, founder, chancellor and warmonger of Mumm-Ra. Meeting bemused local acclaim, five unsuspecting teenagers found themselves writing pop music that sweeps and sways, doing justice to the lush beauty of The Beach Boys via the pastoral quirks of The Kinks to the outer limits reached by The Beta Band and Sigur Ros. James Chance And The Contortions + Proton
AWWWRRRIGHT! Legendary USA jazz-punk-soul singer/sax player comes to York! Check out this footage!! This is Mark E Smith doing James Brown strangling a sax like Albert Ayler. With Lydia Lunch he formed seminal No-Wave (punk meets avant/free jazz) band Teenage Jesus And The Jerks mixing disco with discord and soul with spit. A fascination with black music and horn-spiked stop-on-a-dime funk mixed with confrontational punk led to starting The Contortions and briefly becoming James White. Jazz is about frontiers, right? So here's a legend, not Lisa Simpson; put your Syd Lawrence to one side and come see real jazz; punk; soul; whatever

The Graduate + So So Modern + The Sneakypeeks
Springfield, Illiinois residents tumbling in to the current pop-punk genre of Hoobastank, Fall Out Boy and Yellowcard even though the persistent moping of Corey Warning's teen angst lyrics paddle the more placid end of the emo pool. Chorused guitar and simple riffs blur into shimmers of pealing high-register; it could almost be Death Cab For Cutie covering U2. Supported here by Space-synth-dance-punk merchants and sheep-shagging NZ's answer to Forward Russia but without the Northern drool. We bow before their math rock paeons like 'Upgrade Your Chassis (It's a Pythagorean Party)'. Synth-drenched melody, ang.ul.ar. gee.tar. blimey it could be Muse and Daft Punk on a shit load of E. Tiny Dancers + The Sonic Hearts + Lecorum
Taking cues from The Byrds, Neil Young and Flaming Lips silliness, they may not have listened to anything after 1979; but it's been good enough for slots with Paulo Nutini, Richard Ashcroft and His Bobness so far. A band to fall in love with, then, but they're not without balls, either, having supported Babyshambles and thrown balloons to the audience whilst sending blissful acoustic-led pop out over the heads of most of the 'Pete, Pete' chanting apes. My Brightest Diamond + The Young Republic + The Murderhouse (unplugged) + Aimie J Ryan
The vocal theatrics of Bjork, the soulful seductiveness of Nina Simone and the gothic pop of Portishead, Shara Worden blurs the lines between rock and recital, setting baroque love songs alongside French carols and Prince covers. Her vocal lines might reach for Puccini, but her guitar is pure PJ Harvey
The sonic result falls in chamber-indie netherworld like Kate Bush chasing Henry Mancini, or Edith Piaf just in a mess with 1999. Sometimes fragile, sometimes blazing, always emotive and passionate. Highly recommended! ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

Viking Skull + Year Long Disaster + The Fallen
With Roddy Stone (guitar/vox). Waldie (bass), Jules Cooper (guitar) and JESS MARGERA from CKY (drums)!! 'Get in, get ****ed and get out' - seven words that prompted the existence of Viking Skull. Mix equal parts Motorhead, Sabbath and Maiden. Add a little WASP, stir in Angus & Co, bake for one generation and voila - foot-stomping old-school metal riffs with bluesy overtones and bloody great big massive guitar solos just like what they should be. Viking Skull, then, cool confidence bordering on good old arrogance; a Sabbath groove and AC/DC's libido. Sounds like NWOBHM heaven. ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

Trumans Water + The Bugs
San Diego slackers and cult indie-darlings inspired by Pavement, Beefheart and The Fall and adapting the musical term "squigglycore" - old-skool hardcore meets old-skool punk in a backstreet garage recorded in one take on a crappy cassette-recorder. Counting Sonic Youth, Beck and Stereolab as devotees, the band whose breakthrough album was called 'Spasm Smash XXXOXOX Ox and Ass' are so lo-fi it's silly. Now with a fourth member, they're still a law unto themselves, capturing the spark of early punk but avoiding retrogression by cranking weirdness levels and ditching all the corny stuff. Highly recommended! ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

Art Brut + Popular Workshop
SORRY, SOLD OUT!! Blimey, Eddie Argos is the anti-Johnny Borrell with head boy looks, ruffled hair and jolly banter. More in common with Half Man Half Biscuit and Pulp than oft-compared influence The Fall, they're 'quirky' not 'jokey', OK? Spiky, short, energetic punk/new wave masterpieces fresh from design school and still the new arbiters of cool. It's a bit complicated ... ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

Dead Meadow + Youthmovies + The Falling Spikes + Mantra
Flawless Hendrix/Sabbath riffage, dreamy psych, dirty blues-rock and eerie high-pitched vocals. Miles and miles beyond stoner, this is a beautifully natural sound of early 70s hard rock and 60s psychedelia. Ambient guitar drones in to surging psych-funk sludge, blues-folk tunes in to barbiturate space-rock; oh and some southern slow boogie thrown in for good measure. Think "vintage organic heavy" swirling in a circular trip of great psyche. Recommended! ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

Miss Conduct + Utoxator + Skylights
Welsh pop punkers with a dark underbelly and now fronted by the lovely Emma Jane, leaving a trail of broken hearts in the wake of some insanely catchy songs. Kerrang! reckon they're "More fun than a bathtub full of chocolate" and we agree. No routinely repackaged metal, just great songs like a sexier version of Paramore but with heavier guitars and better hair. They're on the road until the wheels fall off - recommended! Poison The Well + The Plight + The Fallen
Rising quickly through Florida's underground hardcore punk scene and becoming a major USA touring act just on the strength of a debut album. Oh, and some explosive live shows! A brooding and dark metalcore with Slayer's guitar histrionics and the brutal stomp of Hatebreed. Come drink from the well ... ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules. THIS IS AN ALL AGES SHOW AND OVERTLY AGGRESSIVE PIT/SLAM DANCING/USING FISTS/WINDMILLING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. BE RESPECTFUL OF EACH OTHER!

RSJ + Bo-Peep + The Fallen
RSJ should be declared a biohazard and an area of special scientific interest all at the same time. Way way off the Richter Scale with enormous blasts of hardcore metal on a truly seismic scale. And there is no other way to listen to RSJ than at ear-splitting of volume. Think Fantomas on cheap speed or Meshuggah on an experimental day. Whatever, the filthy noise made by York's RSJ is just what we need. ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Click here to read our rules.

Saving Aimee + The Station Club + Cartoon Injury + Martin Wainwright
Saving Aimee James said: "We are like the offspring of the Spice Girls and the Killers - it's like they had a baby and we are it."
Having toured with McFly and Kill Hannah they have been called the British Fall Out Boy and are darlings of the new music press who are heralding great things for the St. Albanian group. Every now and then there sparks a gig that goes down in folklore. Older brothers tell wild stories to younger siblngs, jealously reminiscing over guitar scorched flash's and sweaty shapes. This could be that gig!

Towers Of London + Koopa + Breakout Degree
Fronted by over-the-wall BB bad boy Donny Tourette and reinventing glam-seventies punk, generating enough controversy to start a rock 'n' roll war. Their thumping glam punk rock and snotty attitude sees them fall neatly between the Motley Crue and the Sex Pistols. On stage, guitar and bass necks point to the heavens like some sort of pagan ritual. Guns n Roses meets 70s punk. Hugely entertaining, even if they probably ripped it off Bill and Ted. Engineers + Sketches + Ian Ellwood
'Engineers transcend shoegazing and approach the heights of Spiritualized at their space-rocking best. We need these guys around' - The Times. Four years since their debut effort (following troubles with their old label) Engineers are back with a brand new album 'Three Fact Fader'. Immaculately crafted and executed with great control, Engineers' sound is unassuming yet all consuming. Brighter As We Fall, Helped By Science and Hang Your Head are shaped by the guitar shimmer of the Cocteau Twins and anchoring vocal arrangements born of Teenage Fanclub, the Stone Roses and the best of Seventies American West Coast harmonising. Reccomended.

Erik Mongrain + The Fallen (acoustic)
Amazing. Moving. Incredible. Just a few of the much-deserved words of praise heaped upon Canadian acoustic guitar genius, the 28-yr-old guitarist Erik Mongrain. As a teenager inspired by Bach to Metallica, and Hendrix to Don Ross, Erik began to experiment with a technique known as lap tapping, in which the player lays the guitar across their lap, and taps the strings on the fret board with both hands. Interspersed with classical technique and jazz/pop sensibilities, here is a truly unique musician and entertainer. Recommended!!

Rose Elinor Dougall + What The Cat Dragged In + Towns And Houses + Alice Ostapjuk
Following her departure from The Pipettes in 2008, Rose Elinor Dougall has quietly been recasting herself as a psychedelic-folk chanteuse parexcel lance. Two limited singles have demonstrated a breadth of inspiration, from the timeless, melancholy of Sandy Denny, through the leftfield melodicism of Smiths-era Morrissey to the primitive-futurism of
Broadcast. Her first two singles, Another Version Of Pop Song and Start/Stop/Synchro both raised much aclaim from publications such as the NME, Pitchfork, The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Under The Radar bringing the plaudits. Current single, Fallen Over, (released November 2009) is receiving attention at radio and press and leads Rose perfectly into the New Year. An album, Without Why, is due in 2010. ID IS ESSENTIAL!!

Such judgments cant be made for the deceptfully youthful appearance of Asking Alexandria. Its fringes at dawn for this lot, but dont let that fool you They've got all the swagger and cockiness of a well reputed band and are the most entertaining on the bill tonight. Frontman, Danny Worsnop has a voice As I Lay Dying would be jealous of and AA's sound is overall brutally intense.
