Wed 6 Oct, 2004 @ Fibbers		The Holiday Plan + No Hope In New Jersey + McQueen + Utoxator Three-word name; check. Singer with a high, delicate voice; check. Sparse, uplifting melodies with an undercurrent of gloom; check. The Holiday Plan are emo innit? Oh yeah, in excelsis; one glance at the sleeve credits shows that, with Thursday/Taking Back Sunday producer Tim Gilles manning the knobs they could be nothing but. Crucially though, Gilles has teased the best out of this teenaged quartet, making them sound as though they have the wisdom of ages within them, and when Matt Rider allows his voice to drop an octave - as on ‘Every Day’s Winter’ - he sounds more like Minor Threat’s Ian MacKaye, and the rest of the band fall into line. They like badgers, pies, The Pixies, The Wedding Present, suits, 2-Tone and er dancing penguins. It’s virtually impossible to get a sensible sentence from Chris (guitar, sings), Tony (guitar, sings), Nick (drums, percussion) and Paul (bass, keyboards) but on stage they manage to be confusing, literate, exciting, coarse, surgically accurate and gob-smackingly gonzoid fun. All at once. Mixing metal with jazz, country with punk, alternate drawling and shouting vocals and a Fall-like abandon, to quote Leonard Cohen, they’re the drunk in a midnight choir. Some of you may recognise lead singer Ollie from quarter-million sellers Point Break and numerous TV appearances. He also harbours ambitions to sing with Def Leppard's Joe Elliot. This is no pretty boy no-talent band, guitarist Dean is inspired by the likes of Joe Satriani and Richie Sambora. The band have already appeared extensively on the telly but you can catch them on Diggit, Popart, Popworld and TOTP on Jan 22nd, No 8 in the charts last week. Reykjavik-based Leaves' new album The Angela Test has majestic arrangements, elemental beauty and soaring melodies combining Floyd, Aphex Twin and psychedelic-era Beatles. Wed 30 Nov, 2005 @ Fibbers		Kid Congo and The Monkeybirds + Loophole + GT Turbo Ever hanging around the coolest scenes and a founder member of The Gun Club (with Jeffery Lee Pierce), renegade guitar stylist and "singer's guitarist" Kid Congo has also played with such seminal and nefarious outfits as The Cramps (they set his head on fire at a gig), Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Congo Norvell as well as working with everybody from The Fall to Mark Eitzel. Growing up with Mexican and low rider music, the man with a huge range of styles from tasteful atmospherics to mournful country/blues slide, to raunchy rockabilly to wall of noise fuzz (and sometimes all in one) has assembled a sleazy, sexy band for your delectation. Mon 4 Sep, 2006 @ Fibbers		CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy) + Hot Recruit + Azuma Vega Giving new meaning to the term "get a Brazilian" and with a name which translated means "tired of being sexy", welcome a Sao Paulo sextet surfing the new wave of Brazilian electro-punk and marrying brash Tokyo street sassiness and favela chic to loose, stripped-back beats, angular guitars, punchy synths and er basic programming. Six women, including the fantastically-monikered, half-Japanese singer Lovefoxx producing at turns catchy and clumsy, cheeky and punchy subversive pop. It's Hot Chip covering The Slits trying to update The Fall, armed with cheap synths and catalogue guitars, fronted by Ladytron's wayward little sister. Not a sneer but a giggle. Pretension? Absent. Crisp guitar, deep melodic bass, head cracking beats and conscious lyrics laced with honesty and sincerity and debut 2004 album The Papercut Chronicles is a masterpiece on a minimal budget, but soon picked up on by Pete Wentz, from Fall Out Boy (Island / Fueled By Ramen) – it's set to go mad for this band. Mon 18 Sep, 2006 @ Fibbers		Fionn Regan + Dawn Landes + Slow Club + Marbled A beguiling amalgam of Jackson C Frank, Paul Simon and Jose Gonzalez; Irish-born Fionn Regan’s magic, honesty and sheer heartfeltness sounds like it could have been crafted in the 60s but at least nobody is calling him the new Dylan. Yet. Fluid finger-picked cadences, rough-edged vocals and a bruising, powerful abandon suggests this s real star in the making. Mr Blunt take note of this young head on old shoulders. The last word goes to Olly Knights of Turin Brakes, writing in The Independent, “We've toured with Fionn and fallen deeply in love with his luminous songs of memory, loss and hope. His ability to paint weighty and sublime imagery with words is untouchable and very rare. All I can do when he sings is to shut up and keep breathing." ‘Nuff said. ID IS ESSENTIAL!! Sat 14 Oct, 2006 @ Fibbers		Ratattagg (Reary from Test Icicles) + Gay Against You SLAP! SMACK!! SPANK!!! BOOM!!! BANG!!!! BOSH!!!! Now fallen in to legend, Test Icicles' edge-of-disaster club shows preceded a UK tour with DFA79 and then their own chaotic jaunts around the country. They sounded like everything, all at once, with little left out (neatly summed up by Boa vs Python) and from a set of just three songs record companies were chasing them, and, in their words, "It was all getting rather silly". And so to Reary Deci-Hell's "post hardcore tropical pop" which sounds not unlike Damon Albarn fronting the bastard band-child of Black Sabbath and Boy Kill Boy. Sun 5 Nov, 2006 @ Fibbers		Mumm-Ra + Amusement Parks On Fire + The Falling Spikes Inspired by the duck-ponds, long walks and where "great reward could be found in a simple cup of tea and Tesco was not a multi-billion pound corporation"; so it was that Bexhill-On Sea, "a generous provider of sugary-based delights", provided inspiration for Niall Richey Buckler, founder, chancellor and warmonger of Mumm-Ra. Meeting bemused local acclaim, five unsuspecting teenagers found themselves writing pop music that sweeps and sways, doing justice to the lush beauty of The Beach Boys via the pastoral quirks of The Kinks to the outer limits reached by The Beta Band and Sigur Ros. Their thumping glam punk rock and snotty attitude sees them fall neatly between the Motley Crue and the Sex Pistols. On stage, guitar and bass necks point to the heavens like some sort of pagan ritual. Guns ‘n’ Roses meets 70’s punk. Hugely entertaining, even if they probably ripped it off Bill and Ted. With Lydia Lunch he formed seminal No-Wave (punk meets avant/free jazz) band Teenage Jesus And The Jerks mixing disco with discord and soul with spit. A fascination with black music and horn-spiked stop-on-a-dime funk mixed with confrontational punk led to starting The Contortions and briefly becoming James White. Jazz is about frontiers, right? Chorused guitar and simple riffs blur into shimmers of pealing high-register; it could almost be Death Cab For Cutie covering U2. Supported here by Space-synth-dance-punk merchants and sheep-shagging NZ's answer to Forward Russia but without the Northern drool. 'Get in, get ****ed and get out' - seven words that prompted the existence of Viking Skull. Mix equal parts Motorhead, Sabbath and Maiden. Add a little WASP, stir in Angus & Co, bake for one generation and voila - foot-stomping old-school metal riffs with bluesy overtones and bloody great big massive guitar solos just like what they should be. Counting Sonic Youth, Beck and Stereolab as devotees, the band whose breakthrough album was called 'Spasm Smash XXXOXOX Ox and Ass' are so lo-fi it's silly. Now with a fourth member, they're still a law unto themselves, capturing the spark of early punk but avoiding retrogression by cranking weirdness levels and ditching all the corny stuff.
