The gripping and enduring 2007 highly acclaimed debut Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters, Forget the Night Ahead was a dark and difficult fanfare for The Twilight Sad, chief Scots indie royalty for this generation. Instead of subsequently sinking deeper down they have stripped down, reworked and reinvented a sophomore sound and are as relevant as ever, even open to remixes of their own work.
On latest assured album Nobody Wants To Be Here And No Nobody Wants To Leave the synths are comfortable in their supporting role, new orchestral sounds emerge, guitars return to the forefront and Graham’s rich vocal is more assured, with a newly matured verve for heart-melting melody that elevates to a place where the band had earlier dabbled.
There’s still that booming, room-filling expansiveness beloved of Interpol and The National, and where elements of Fourteen Autumns are revisited and grasped the band now soars with a matured clarity and punchy guitar, addictive refrains and vocal melodies to weep over.
A re-ignited vigour for putting melody centre stage, yeah … NOBODY wants to leave.
