Norwegian black-jazz pioneers SHINING have created their own unique and hardcore hybrid of jazz (BUT NO BORING NOODLING!!) and extreme metal.
But this isn’t the Swedish black metal band Shining, it is in fact is the band’s slightly crazier Norwegian doppelganger. A super-sized combo of electronic, industrial metal and noise music for fans of Ministry and Godflesh, fans unfazed by electronic, classical and jazz all thrown in the pile.
Like most industrial bands, you get that giant fuzzy crusher of a bass/guitar combo. It’s easy to draw comparisons with fellow saxophone slinging heavy hounds Ephel Duath, or kings of weird like Orthrelm, but other times the square and battering nature of high speed repetitive elements are more akin to what electronic bands like Squarepusher or Aphex Twin.
Produced and mixed by Sean Beavan and Tom Baker (both on Marilyn Manson / Nine Inch Nails / Slayer duties), check out the vid link of Trolltunga – a giant piece of rock poking out of a mountain at 700 metres. It’s pretty freakin’ metal… Shining frontman Jørgen Munkeby said, “The absolute craziest day of my life, and an experience that will be ingrained in my viking bones until I die!”.
Inspired by Norse mythology, doomsday cults and science fiction, harder and more intens
Norwegian black jazz then – metal meets jazz, at the very top of a weird pile. And no noodling…
